Renting Vs. Owning

Are there any stages in life where renting would be better than owning? If no, why not? If yes, what stages and why? Also, how does owning a home ultimately make money for you? Is it the same with a car? How can any of this knowledge apply to you right now. If you're young and still moving around/living in different places, renting would better. You wouldn't have to pay so much, and you'd get free will to move anywhere. If you're in a financial slump, renting would be helpful too. It's cheaper, although you wouldn't have as much room to live. Owning a home makes you money because over time you update it, fix it up, make it more valuable. If you want to sell it in the future, it'll be worth more than when you first bought it. Cars are different. They decrease invalue. No matter how much you paint up a house and change it's oil, it's engine will run out at one point, and you have to replace the tires so frequently. It goes down in value each year. This knowledge applies to me because I can know that buying a car will not affect me too much in the future, and I won't be tempted to spend a ton of money making it pretty, because at one point it'll be useless.
